Steel Building vs. Metal Building- What is the Difference?

Let’s say you want a new pre-engineered building for your business, church or farm. Should you purchase a steel building or a metal building? Is there a difference? The terms “steel” and “metal” are used synonymously in the construction industry – but should they be?

Let’s start with definitions:

  • Metal –a solid material that is typically hard, shiny, malleable, fusible, and ductile, with good electrical and thermal conductivity (e.g., iron, gold, silver, copper, and aluminum, and alloys such as brass and steel).
  • Steel –a hard, strong, gray or bluish-gray alloy of iron with carbon and usually other elements, used extensively as a structural and fabricating material.

The meaning of steel is rather straight forward. It is an alloy, or combination, of primarily iron and carbon. You will find both iron (Fe) and carbon (C) listed in the periodic table (You remember the periodic table from high school chemistry right?).

Metal buildings have long been the preferable method of construction for industrial, commercial and institutional uses. Today, however, more and more people are choosing to utilize a metal building system as their residential space too. In this article, I will cover some of the reasons why a metal building system makes a superior residential building option to traditional wood-framed construction.

Let’s first address three different methods of residential steel construction. The first type of construction method involves the framing of the residential structure out of steel studs. This method of construction looks similar to traditional wood-framed construction except the builder is using engineered steel studs instead of wood.
