Save the Planet With Steel Building Systems

If someone asked you to name a common form of construction that also has a high recycled content, would you select steel building systems? If you did, give yourself a gold star because you are correct. Steel is North America’s number one recycled material by far. More than 70,000,000 tons of steel will be recycled in 2013 alone. By comparison, we will recycle 48,000,000 tons of paper in North America in 2013. Let’s take a brief look at where our steel comes from.

There are two basic ways that steel is made. The first, and more traditional method of steel production, is the basic oxygen furnace (BOF). The BOF melts pig-iron, scraps of iron and steel to make new steel. Companies that use BOF are referred to as integrated steel mills. Scrap steel is not a major material input for integrated steel mills. The only integrated steel mill still headquartered in North America is U.S.Steel Corporation.
