How Metal Buildings Help Growing Churches

South Spring Baptist Church metal building

South Spring Baptist Church, located in Tyler, Texas, is a young church rooted in a rich history with a strong commitment to community and spiritual growth. The church can be traced back to the South campus of the First Baptist Church of Tyler, the foundational Baptist church in the area. In 2017, South Springs Baptist Church opened as an independent offshoot of the South campus location of FBC.

Since then, the church has seen significant growth, both in its congregation and in the scope of its ministries. As the congregation expanded, the need for larger and more versatile facilities became evident to support various programs and accommodate the increasing number of members and the various programs of the church.

Situation

The young but thriving church faced a significant challenge. Their young family population was growing rapidly, but they lacked adequate space for their expanding youth department. This limitation was impacting their ability to plan large youth gatherings effectively, and it would only become a bigger issue in the future.

The only available space for youth activities was the sanctuary, which presented several problems. Clearing and repositioning chairs in the sanctuary for each youth event was time-consuming and unsustainable. The sanctuary was not an ideal environment for youth group activities. Youth programs often conflicted with other sanctuary uses. If the church was to continue growing, it needed to invest in additional facilities.

South Spring Baptist Church decided on a facilities expansion to create a space dedicated to the youth department that would meet their needs immediately and accommodate future growth.

Since Tyler Building Systems (TBS) delivered a positive experience in constructing their main church building, the church leadership returned to TBS with an opportunity to not only solve their space issues but also to create a place that would reflect their commitment to youth and families in the Tyler area.

Solution

South Springs Baptist Church was looking to build an modern and attractive building for the youth department somewhere on the church campus. TBS, through its design-build division Tycon Construction Group, offered a comprehensive solution to South Springs Baptist Church.

The collaboration provided for start to finish construction services, including

  • Site Selection: Tycon assisted in choosing the ideal location on the church campus, positioning the new youth building near the main entrance to serve as an attractive focal point.

  • Customized Design: Building on concept drawings by Butler Architectural Group, Tycon designed a structure that would blend with existing architecture while meeting specific youth department needs. This included limiting the number of entrances for better access control.

  • Hybrid Construction Approach: To meet both aesthetic and budgetary requirements, TBS proposed a hybrid construction method, combining structural elements with a metal building system. This innovative approach kept costs within budget while achieving a unique, non-commercial look.

  • Streamlined Process: Tycon's design-build solution allowed for a faster construction process compared to traditional methods. They prepared preliminary floor plans and elevation drawings for budget approval, then began site work while finalizing designs.

  • Metal Building Expertise: Tyler Building Systems provided the metal building system components, leveraging their expertise in this area.

The church's new youth building, positioned prominently near the campus entrance, was designed to be eye-catching, but complement the existing architecture on campus. Based on the existing business relationship, TBS was chosen to be part of the solution. Tycon offered not only the partnership with TBS for the custom metal building manufacturing, but also because of the efficient design-build approach which allowed the construction process to begin much faster than the traditional draw, bid, and construct method of construction.

Budget constraints were a key consideration for the project, addressed through careful planning and preliminary designs. To meet both financial and aesthetic goals, a hybrid construction method combining structural and metal building systems was employed. This innovative approach allowed the church to stay within budget while achieving a distinctive appearance for the youth facility.

The new youth building has been a resounding success for the church. One member commented, “I feel at home and my kids don't want to leave their classes on Sundays.” And the youth program has expanded beyond the walls of the church, into the community. The building project provided an exceptional outcome, exceeding expectations.

  • Expanded Capacity: The church now has ample space to grow their youth department, with room for future expansion.

  • Attractive Design: The building serves as an appealing focal point of the church campus, immediately communicating the church's commitment to youth programs.

  • Improved Functionality: Youth programs no longer conflict with sanctuary use, allowing for more flexible scheduling and dedicated space for youth activities.

  • Budget-Friendly Solution: The hybrid construction approach kept the project within the church's budget while delivering a high-quality, customized building.

  • Positive Impact on Growth: The new space has become a draw for youth, potentially attracting new families to the church.

The church now has a modern, purpose-built facility that not only meets their current needs but also positions them for future growth in their youth ministry. In fact, the church is so happy with the results from this project, they are in discussions about even more additional work on the church campus with TBS and Tycon Construction Group.

A visitor recently commented, “What an incredible campus! Aesthetically modern and welcoming, with a large open space for public outreach. It's the kind of place you want in a church today.”

Tyler Building Systems working in collaboration with Tycon Construction delivered an innovative, cost-effective facilities solution that blends functionality with attractive design, even for this specialized project for a quickly growing church.
